How Are STIs/STDs Spread?

Sexually transmitted infections and diseases are contracted through oral, anal or vaginal sexual contact with an infected person. Because the infected person rarely shows any visible symptoms, it makes it easier to spread STIs/STDs from one person to another.

What Are Some Common STIs/STDs?

There are dozens of STIs/STDs that have been identified throughout the world. Below you will find a list of common STIs that are prevalent in both women and men in the United States.

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
  • Chlamydia
  • Genital Herpes
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

How Do I Know If I Have An STI/STD?

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to self-diagnose STIs/STDs because many of them are asymptomatic or produce symptoms that could be associated with other infections, or even the common cold. You may or may not even realize that you or your partner has an STI/STD. That’s why it’s so important to get tested after having sexual contact with anyone.

Here are some symptoms that women may experience if infected with an STI:

  • Milky white, yellow or green vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal blisters or sores
  • Burning/painful urination
  • Pain during sex
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods
  • Lower back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen joints
  • Rectal pain

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have an STI.

What STIs/STDs Do You Test For And Treat?

At Northfield Women’s Center, we test for both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. If test results are positive for Chlamydia, we can provide treatment at no-cost to you at our Center. If test results are positive for Gonorrhea, we will provide you with referrals to medical clinics in the area so you can receive the proper treatment.

If you think you may be infected or you just want to have peace of mind, you owe it to yourself to get tested – even if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms! Request an appointment today.
